KUCHING: Today is Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg’s first anniversary of his appointment as sixth Chief Minister of Sarawak.
Prior to his appointment as Chief Minister, he was Deputy Chief Minister to then Chief Minister Pehin Seri Adenan Satem before the widely loved latter died of heart complications.
The assemblyman for Satok who first contested in 1981 won the hearts of many Sarawakians. They have shown respect and love for the state leader not without reasons.
Met in a mall yesterday, Alif Aidil Abadi, 18, said: “I like Abang Johari. He is friendly. He is a caring leader. Life is good under his leadership and nothing I can complain about.”
Another 18-year-old teenager, Ng Siong Fatt said: “I am happy. I enjoy my life in Sarawak. The leader is good and the place is good. I do hope for better opportunities for us young people and I believe this will come true under the leadership of Abang Johari who is focused and determined in getting things planned and achieved for Sarawak.”
Ng Hui Ling, 62-year-old home maker said: “He works well with party leaders. He has the heart to serve the people regardless of race and religion. He is down to earth. We support him.”
Businessman Yeo Khim Chuan, 35, said: “He is an aggressive, intelligent and ambitious leader. I like his courage in the sense of not only sustaining Sarawak citizens’ living standard but has implemented many policies for development to improve the standard of living.
“The implementation of digital economy has been clearly the key policy for a better future for us, for our children. I appreciate his leadership and am looking forward to more in the near future.”
Yeo added that as a Sarawakian, he hoped for a better living in Sarawak, as Sarawak is home.
“At business point of view, we are able to see how Sarawak economy has become better and how our living standard will be improved. As parents, a better tomorrow for our children,” said Yeo.
UiTM Sarawak Associate Professor Dr Caesar De Alwis said: “Our dear chief minister has good leadership qualities as he is able to embrace differences in our multi-cultural society with ease.
“He is fair and true in his dealings and frustrates those who are on the lookout for hyperbole and misleading statements from him. Our chief minister is definitely a self-actualised leader.”
