KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg says the efforts to reconcile United People’s Party (UPP) and Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) are still underway.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, he said he would not fail Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who recently tasked him to work out the  reconciliation.

“The prime minister asked me to negotiate but I cannot reveal now. The negotiation is still in progress,” he said after chairing a state Barisan Nasional (BN) Supreme Council meeting at Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatuk (PBB) headquarters here.

When pressed for more, Abang Johari then gestured to Local Government and Housing Minister and SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who was also present, by pointing out: “You see he (Dr Sim) is smiling.”

Before touching on the UPP-SUPP issue, Abang Johari said various committees would be formed to prepare the state BN for the next parliamentary election.

“We do not know when the election is but definitely we will form various committees to face the election.”

He said there will be joint committees while the state BN would also launch its own election manifesto on top of the national BN manifesto. He added that the various joint committees would also take care of the transport and movement of the BN election machinery.
