Roslan Bujang’s victory No. 2 on Sunday.

KUCHING: Roslan Bujang opened the new season in fine style, booting home a hat trick to take the lion’s share of the five-event race card on Sunday.

The top jockey got off the mark on Big Chief in Race One (Class 5 -1000M) before bringing off two more winners — Peace Pipe in Race Two (Class 4 – 1000M) and Wind Chaser in Race Four (Class Two – 1000M).

Big Chief, the first of Roslan’s three winners, scored by five lengths from Elturius (Maruf Wahab) to pay RM7.

Dragon Master (Hamid Elli) was a distant third.

Peace Pipe produced a spirited gallop to win by nine lengths from Dash For Cash (Hamid Elli), giving Roslan his second win.

Geronimo (Jasmi Kamar) was third, 2 ¾ lengths further back.

The winner paid RM13.

Wind Chaser rounded up the treble for Roslan, passing the post five lengths clear of Crescendo (Mazlan Bujang) to pay RM26.

Kimanis (Othman Putit) was a long third.

The three winners are owned by W Stable.

Big Chief and Peace Pipe are trained by Edmund Sim while Tamizi Putit saddles Wind Chaser.

Old timer Kamar Yaman showed he still has an ace or two up his sleeves by stealing the thunder of the younger jockeys in Race 5 (Class 1 –1000M).

The septuagenarian jockey, standing in for Mazlan Bujang, rode a strong finish on Zorro to upstage the riding competition, some half his age, and reduce hot favourite Monolita to second best by a good two lengths.

Dream Catcher II (Roslan Bujang) was third, two lengths further back.

The winner, owned Sara Stable and trained by Lee Moi Fong, obliged with a good payout of RM57.

Volcano (Othman Putit), strongly fancied to win in Race Three (Class 3 – 1000M), could produce only a tiny boom, finishing last but one in a field of eight.

The race was won by Hitam Manis (Jasmi Kamar) who beat Bojeng (Hamid Elli) by six lengths with Miracle (Amirzull Othman) a distant third.

The winner, owned by Beraya Stable and trained by Tamizi Putit, paid RM12.

The going was heavy.

The Second Day of the First Meeting was cancelled.

The next meeting will be on March 11.
