Factory worker charged with murder of girlfriend’s daughter

MIRI: A furniture factory worker was produced in the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon for allegedly murdering a Form One student – who was his girlfriend’s daughter.

Yap Kak Min, 32, from Desa Pujut, Lorong 5 Bandar Baru Permyjaya here was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides mandatory death sentence, upon conviction.

Based on the brief facts of the case, the accused from Kuala Lumpur was accused of murdering, Nasreen Tan Chai Wei, aged 12 years 11 months and four days.

He allegedly committed the offence between 8am and 5.50pm on Jan 9, 2018 at a house at Lot 5851 Desa Pujut, Lorong 5, Bandar Baru Tudan, Lutong/Kuala Baram here.

The accused, although not represented by a lawyer, was calm at the dock and only nodded his head after the interpreter read the charges on him, in Malay.

However, no plea was taken from the accused.

In the court, prosecutor ASP Mary Ong applied for a new date for further mention while waiting for a chemist report, a post-mortem and forensic report to be finalised.

She said no bail was offered to the accused as the case was serious.

Judge Steve Ritikos, who heard the case, allowed the application and fixed February 22 for further mention of the case. The accused was ordered to be detained in the Miri Central Prison pending trial.
