SIBU: Sibu City Swan Snooker Club (SCSSC) has appointed state top cueist Ng Hong Man as coach to upgrade the standard of play in the state.

The 49-year-old businessman said he was happy to take up the task which he described as challenging and encouraging.

“I am grateful to SCSSC for appointing me as the coach and I pledge to do my best to serve the club with my utmost abilities, and hopefully my services can be of vital use to boost the standard of the players,” he said.

Ng also pledged to redouble his own efforts to polish his game and playing techniques so that he can share it with other players and promote the good values for taking up snooker.

SCSSC chairman Mark Yeo said the appointment came at the most appropriate time when the sport is getting popular among the youngsters here.

“With the services of the coach, this will better help upgrade the standard of the game and hopefully, in the long run it will help attract more players to take up the sport.”

Yeo has been instrumental in working to elevate the sport once considered a dirty game played only by gangsters.

“Those should be the past mentality and today, rest assured that snooker can be considered as one of the healthy sports,” he said.

Yeo admitted that the standard of snooker here had remained stagnant over the years, due partly to lack of coaches who are willing to take up the challenge to guide the novice players.

“Any sport must have coaches in order for the standard to progress,” he said.

Yeo said Ng is a most qualified player to be appointed as coach, taking into account his collections of accolades in the past years, including the 2016 Sarawak Closed Championship title.

Ng attended training cum coaching stint in Bangkok two years ago where he crossed cue with some international players.
