SIBU: Mark Yeo became the first player to qualify for the last eight of the 3rd leg of Sibu City Swan Snooker Championship held at Southern Snooker Centre last weekend.

He swept aside Andy Tiang 2-0 (62-22, 54-41) in the battle of the last 16 to book a place in the quarter-finals.

Among those joining him are Christopher Yii, Ricky Thiam and Liau Cheng Kiong.

Yii, representing Sarikei Kelab Cue Repok, created an upset when he edged Ting Siew Chon 2-1 (56-53, 45-52, 60-30).

The surprise started in the first frame which Yii won by a mere three points. In the second frame, Ting dictated the pace but he lost momentum in the third frame, allowing Yii to surge to an early lead before winding up the game at 60-30.

A total of 48 players including two women – Kong Ling Feng and Yeo Wen Tiing – are taking part in the tournament. Yeo was a first round casualty but heralded Kong created a major surprise to beat her opponent in the first round.

In the battle for the last 32, however, she had to face defending champion Ng Hong Man and she tamely went down 0-2.

The tournament offers prize money of RM1,000 (champion), RM500 (runner-up), RM250 each (semi-finalists) and RM100 each (quarter-finalists).
