KUCHING: A record 118 school teachers participated in the Tenpin Bowling Instructor Course at the Megalanes Sarawak, Batu Kawa started yesterday.

The three-day course was organised by Amateur Bowling (Tenpin) Association of Sarawak (Abas) with the full support from Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC).

It is a follow-up to last year’s course in July where only 55 teachers participated.

The Phase II course also provides opportunity to teachers who missed out the first course.

Teachers as far as Bau, Serian, Kota Samarahan, Demak Laut, Matang, Asajaya, Semunjan, Muara Tebas and even Mukah attended.

Abas vice president Robert Lu Nam Min said that it was so encouraging to see so many teachers joining this course.

“Teachers will have the skills and knowledge to coach their students at basic levels. We have to continue to see that youth development in sports be emphasised.

“It is our social obligation to ensure that our youth in Sarawak be active in sports, and in return, our talent scouting will be from a much wider base,” he said.

Course conductors are Abas certified coaches Robert Lu, Jackson Ting, Angelo Koay and Bong Kihow.

SSC coach for youth development centre Jerusha Chan, who has a Master degree in Sports Science, will be presenting the benefits of warming up exercises.

Another presenter is Dr Pathmanathan Suppiah, who also holds a Master Degree in Sports Science, will be speaking on long-term athletes’ development and education through sports.

Skill drills and the physical game will be conducted by Khairul Faizi Yusop and national sports icon, bowling queen and four-time world champion Shalin Zulkifli.

There will be a meet-and-greet session with Shalin today at 3pm.
