KOTA KINABALU: The health condition of Iman, Sabah’s sole female Sumatran rhinoceros that is kept in captivity at a facility in Tabin, is improving.

Sabah Wildlife Department director Augustine Tuuga  said she was still having a discharge.

Fortunately, her appetite has improved and that she continues being given treatment. And for now, she is still being kept in her paddock and has not been allowed out to lie in her wallow, he said.

Augustine also commented that SWD was happy that the Indonesian government had agreed to send samples of Sumatran Rhinoceros semen to Malaysia for the Advanced Reproductive Technology programme.

“This was agreed during the Technical Expert Meeting of both Indonesia and Malaysia in Jakarta last 18-20 October 2017,” he said.

“Hopefully the Memorandum of Agreement for the cooperation in Sumatran Rhinoceros Conservation between the Indonesian and Malaysian governments will be signed soon to allow for the establishment of a joint working group. This will also pave the way for the full implementation of the cooperation,” he said.
