KUCHING: Mydin Petra Jaya, developed at a cost of RM200 million, is offering 500 job opportunities besides a wide array of quality and reasonably-priced products to Sarawakians.

Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd managing director Datuk Dr Ameer Ali Mydin said Mydin Petra Jaya, the third Mydin hypermarket in Sarawak and 26th in Malaysia, is divided into two sections namely hypermarket and mall.

“The entire Mydin building covers more than 800,000 sq ft while the hypermarket covers an area of some 300,000 sq ft, selling a variety of products,” he said before Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg launched Mydin Petra Jaya yesterday.

Ameer said Mydin Petra Jaya has a designated area for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to market and promote their products.

According to him, there are 1,133 parking bays both in the open area and basement carpark at Mydin Petra Jaya.

He informed the community here that what made Mydin’s ‘Kad Meriah’ special was that its members would be insured apart from enjoying member price.

“Kad Meriah is probably the most unique member card in not just Malaysia but the whole world because when card holders spend RM60 in January alone at Mydin, if anything happens to them in February, their immediate families like wife and children are entitled to RM300 per month for a year to shop at Mydin.

“The premium will be paid by Mydin and the insurance company is Takaful Insurance. We do this as part of our corporate social responsibility (CSR),” he said.

In conjunction with the launch, Ameer said Mydin Petra Jaya is offering Gardenia bread at the same price as Peninsular Malaysia.

He said the Gardenia buns, which are sold at RM1.1 each in Peninsular Malaysia, will be offered at the same price at Mydin Petra Jaya.

“These buns are usually sold at RM1.90 in Sarawak but now we are offering them at RM1.1 each. The same goes with the Gardenia loaves. We will offer the Gardenia bread at the same price you can get in Peninsular Malaysia while we can afford it. This is something unique we want to give to our customers in Sarawak,” he added.

During a post-launch news conference, Ameer said Mydin registered a total sales worth RM3 billion a year.

“Mydin is the third largest hypermarket chain in Malaysia. There are 77 Mydin outlets, of which 26 are hypermarkets throughout Malaysia.”

He said Mydin was grateful to the state government for its operations in Sarawak while pointing out that the chain corporation had been in business for 60 years.

He said Mydin had prospered in the country over the decades while Malaysia also enjoyed prosperity all along.

In order for Mydin and Malaysia to continue thriving, Ameer said it was imperative for all to preserve the current political stability.

“I’m not a politician but I have to say that a stable government is very important for businesses to prosper and Mydin is one of them to enjoy prosperity amidst political stability all these years.

“The most important thing is that the government must listen to the people and change according to what the people want,” he said, adding that this is also how Mydin sustained and enhanced its business – by meeting the market demand.

Among those present was Abang Johari’s wife Datin Patinggi Dato’ Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang.
