SIBU: Sibu Table Tennis Association (STTA) president Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau Lee Ming wants to see national or even international table tennis tournaments to be held here in the near future.

“Of course, hosting bigger tournaments requires huge resources, both in terms of financial and manpower and I believe STTA has the capabilities and the abilities to make things happen,” he said during the Ping Pong Night held here on Friday.

Among those present at the dinner function were STTA advisor Dr William Ting Wei Ung and chairman Dr Clement Chen.

It was held to mark STTA’s success in the 57th Sarawak Table Tennis Championship held in Serian when it secured eight gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals to lift the overall title.

Lau noted that STTA is the only table tennis association in the country to have its own hall (at Merdeka Road) which is fully equipped with the necessary facilities and logistics to host bigger tournaments in future.

“This is an area which STTA members should look into for that is also one way to further promote and upgrade the sport that has generated lots of interests among the younger generations,” he said.

He also asked local table tennis enthusiasts to make full use of the hall.

“It’s a good venue to conduct your training practices and also a place to do your exercises to keep yourself fit and healthy,” he said.

STTA, he pledged, will continue to give out incentives and awards to outstanding players and added, “We want results and we are happy that STTA have continue to churn out outstanding players in these few years.”

Earlier, Chen revealed that STTA is seeking foreign coaches to upgrade the playing standard here.

“STTA does not belong to me but it belong to everyone. If any one of you have any proposals or ideas on how to improve STTA, you can always write in your requests to STTA and we will look into all your proposals,” he said.
