SIBU: A total of 767 dogs were vaccinated at Hui Ning Garden here during the two-day exercise which ended yesterday, accounting for the most number of pets vaccinated at a single location thus far.

This brought the total number of pet dogs vaccinated in Sibu division to 1,542 as at Jan 28.

Although it was raining heavily before the start of the programme yesterday, it did not stop pet owners from bringing their dogs for vaccination.

From the 767 dogs vaccinated at Hui Ning Garden, 396 were vaccinated on Jan 27, while 371 were vaccinated yesterday.

Ministry of Local Government and Housing public health chief Dr Cheong Yaw Ling was present at the vaccination site.

For the record, the exercise started on Jan 20 and will end on March 1.

Prior to the programme at Hui Ning Garden, response from the public had been rather lukewarm. During the two-day programme (Jan 20 to 21) in Sibu Jaya, only 367 dogs were vaccinated.

In Durin Kiba on Jan 25, the team only managed to vaccinate 59 dogs.

Assistant Minister of Housing and Public Health Dr Annuar Rapaee repeatedly remind pet owners to keep their dogs within their house compounds at all times, especially within one month after vaccination.

‘This is because the vaccine only works one month after the injection,” said Dr Annuar, who is also Assistant Minister for Education and Technological Research.

The Nangka assemblyman, who heads the rabies control team, assured members of the public they need not worry about missing out the session as other centres are open over the next couple of weeks.

Tomorrow (Jan 30), the free mass anti-rabies vaccination programme will be at Sungai Assan area from 9am till 4pm.

Members of the public can call 013-8077964 or 084-310808 to find out the exact location and dates for the free vaccination for their dogs.
