Two years’ jail, four strokes for cheating

SIBU: A 31-year-old man was yesterday sentenced by a magistrate’s court here to two years’ jail and four strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to two counts of cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.

The charges against the accused, John Aryu, were framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code which provides for a minimum one-year jail but not exceeding 10 years, with whipping and/or a fine upon conviction.

He cheated his 57-year-old former girlfriend twice, which involved RM1,800.

For the first charge, he cheated the woman of RM1,000 at a bank in Sibu Jaya on March 23, 2017.

For the second charge, he committed the same offence on the victim which involved RM800 at a bank in Kampung Nyabor Road on July 17, 2017.

For each charge, he was sentenced to a year in jail and two strokes of the cane. The sentences are to run consecutively.

According to the facts of the case, John had asked the woman for her ATM card for the purpose of getting a job in Miri.

John later contacted her to borrow some money for a check-up at a private hospital in Miri before he could start work.

She banked in RM1,000 into her own bank account on March 23, 2017 and another RM800 on July 17 of the same year.

After that, the accused could not be contacted anymore. She later found out that the accused did not undergo any health check at a private hospital in Miri.

She lodged a police report on Jan 10. The accused was arrested on Jan 21.
