MIRI: Three new records were created on the second day of the 45th Sarawak Age Group (SAG) Swimming Championship at the Miri Public Swimming Pool as Kota Samarahan Amateur Swimming Association (Kotas) maintained their lead in the six-team competition.
Kotas collected 14 more gold, 8 silver and 9 bronze medals to bring their two-day medal haul to 27-16-12 with their star performer Hii Puong Wei dominating the Boy’s Group B (13-14 years) and bringing his personal tally to 10 gold and a silver.
Limbang Amateur Swimming Association (Lasa) are still in second place, trailing Kotas by two gold while Kuching Amateur Swimming Association (Kasa) swimmers splashed to a good day’s collection of 14 gold, 8 silver and 16 bronze to close the gap on the top two, trailing Kotas by three gold and Lasa by one gold in the three-horse race for the overall title.
In fourth to sixth positions were Sibu Amateur Swimming Association (Sasa) who overtook host Miri Amateur Swimming Association (Masa) with 13-18-18 against the latter’s 9-10-7 bronzes, and Basa with 1-3-12.
Limbang swimmers, however, hogged the individual limelight smashing the three records, all in the Group E (8 and Under) category.
The day’s first record was created by Dylan Leong Yi Quan who clocked 44.84s in the Boy’s 50m breaststroke to erase the old mark of 47.06s set by Kotas swimmer Awang Yuhaineq Hazneq in Kuching last year.
This was followed by Seau Zhi Ping who posted a new time of 1:37.28s in Boy’s 100m backstroke to beat the old record of 1:41.03s set by Kasa 2010’s Presley Phang also in 2017.
The silver and bronze medallists David Wei You Qing of Sasa and Hansel Tan of Kasa also beat the old time by clocking 1:37.75s and 1:38.00s respectively.
The third record for the day came in the Girl’s 50m butterfly when Janice Tan Xing Xuan was timed at 44.18s to lower the old record of 45.00s set by Kelly Teo of Kasa three years ago.
Fifty-six more events will be competed today.
Amateur Swimming Association of Sarawak president Dato Wee Hong Seng will then close the championship at 5pm.
