MIRI: More support and collaboration from the private sector, individuals and organisations are needed to sustain the hosting of international events to promote Miri as a tourist destination in the region.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin made the call during a courtesy visit from Miri Anglers Club that is organising the 11th Miri City International Deep Sea Fishing  Tournament in May this year.

Earlier, Lee was briefed on the previous and upcoming events which had gradually gained interest from anglers in the region particularly those from Singapore and China.

“Every year, the organiser received more than 150 entries for the tournament from both local and international anglers with about 60 per cent foreign entries from Singapore and China and a few from Australasia region and Europe,” said Lee.

Due to constraints, Miri Anglers Club could only accommodate a small number of less than 200 participants.

“We have limited boats which we rent from local fishermen to ferry participants to the venue which is in the South China Sea.”

In this context, he urged the private sector, individuals and organisations to collaborate and work together with Miri Anglers Club in the running of the event.

Meanwhile, Miri Anglers Club is offering early bird promotion – entry fee of RM400 per person or RM100 x 3persons for a team that registers before April 30.

The tournament will be held from May 10 to 13 as one of Miri’s May Fest activities.
