MIRI: The public swimming pool here will be upgraded to provide a more comfortable environment for swimmers who are training there.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Art and Culture, Datuk Lee Kim Shin said improved facilities will help bring Miri back to its former glory days in swimming.

“Priority will be given to building a covered rooftop over the pool because the weather is affecting the swimmers training.

“They cannot practise when it is raining and when the weather is too hot. Having a roof over the pool will definitely solve this problem. I am very sure that the swimmers parents will also be very happy with this as their children can practice any time rain or shine,” he said.

Lee disclosed when officiating at the launch of  the 45th Sarawak Age Group Swimming Championship at the Miri Public Pool yesterday.

Over 280 swimmers from six divisions – Miri, Bintulu, Kuching, Kota Samarahan, Limbang and Sibu – are taking part in the three-day meet.

Also present at the opening ceremony were Piasau assemblyman Sebastian Ting, Miri Mayor Adam Yii and Miri Amateur Swimming Association president Rafiza Morshidi.

Lee said the meet was a good platform to spot talent and “help our swimming athletes move further in the sport and even compete in higher level swimming meets.”

The assistant minister also thanked volunteers who helped ensure that the championship runs smoothly.
