SIBU: United People’s Party (UPP) hopes that its two potential candidates for Sibu and Lanang parliamentary seats will be given the opportunity to represent Barisan Nasional (BN) in the coming 14th general election (GE14).

Its president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said he hoped the BN top leadership would select the candidates with the highest chance of winning to contest the two seats, naming the candidates as Dato Andrew Wong for Sibu and Andrew Ting for Lanang parliamentary constituencies respectively.

“If they have a chance, certainly they will work hard for the next five years and bring development to Sibu,” he said in his address at the pre-Chinese New Year gathering organised by UPP Seduan Service Committee that was held at a restaurant in Sungai Bidut here on Saturday night.

Andrew Wong and Andrew Ting were at the gathering.

Soon Koh, who is also the Minister of International Trade and E-Commerce, said both of them had come up with the Sibu five-year-plan (RS1), which is their promise for greater development in Sibu.

“RS1 is to connect the people, benefit the people and bring benefits to the people of Sibu, so that young people can unravel their talents and provide opportunities for them and all other people to join hands and lead the masses to partake in development together,” he elaborated.

On the Chinese New Year celebration, Wong stressed that it is not just about eating and drinking but about filial piety – respecting elders and showing gratitude to parents, which is part of Chinese culture.
