Premix coffee brand taken off shelves

KOTA KINABALU: The premix coffee brand that is believed to be tampered with is no longer on the shelves of major hypermarkets and supermarkets here.

A survey at Servay Hypermarkets at KK Plaza and Milemewa Supermarket in town found that both outlets have taken the product off the shelves since news reports of people falling ill after consuming the coffee emerged.

The product was also not found at Giant Hypermarket in City Mall and CKS Supermarket in Bundusan.

Meanwhile, Pick N Pay reported that the supermarket chain did not carry the premix coffee brand.

Several people have become ill after consuming the premix coffee that were believed to have been  tampered with.

George Town police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Omar said substances believed to be drugs, were found in samples of the premix coffee.

He said checks showed that the sachets were opened and resealed as signs of tearing were found at the bottom, while the resealed sachets also weighed 10 grams more than its original weight of 40 grams.

Annuar also said there was a green substance in the premix coffee which was different from the original.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam has also warned the public not to consume premix coffee offered by strangers as it might be spiked with drugs.

He said it seemed that there was some kind of syndicate giving away coffee sachets which contained drugs.

Victims were reported to experience extreme fatigue and weakness while some also fainted after allegedly drinking the coffee.
