Ampi’s body is found in the river by SAR team members, about 3km from where he went missing.

DEBAK: The body of an elderly man was found along Sungai Rimbas Baru here yesterday, two days after he went missing while bathing at the river near his longhouse.

The deceased, Ampi @ Steward Ampi Gani, 69, was located by search-and-rescue (SAR) personnel around 11.20am, some three kilometres from where he went missing.

A spokesperson from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the SAR team initially located Ampi’s towel and soap about 100 metres downstream from where he went missing.

“The second day of operations began around 8am, involving Bomba, police, Civil Defence Force and local villagers. Around 8.30am, the victim’s towel and soap were found, and this then led to the discovery of the body.”

Ampi’s wife told authorities that he had gone to the river to bathe around 2pm on Monday but never returned home.

Family members had tried to search for him on their own before deciding to lodge a missing persons report when they failed to locate him.
