SIBU: Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) is hoping to shave 1,200 heads to raise RM1 million at its 10th Go Bald 2018.

Its president Jocelyn Hee said Go Bald which is entering its 10th year has helped many children who are battling cancer.

She said through the project, the public has given great support to cancer-stricken children and their families. She said it boost the children’s morale when they watch the recordings of our project activities held throughout the state.

“It’s heartening to see people from every corner of the state shaving their heads as signs of support for the children and their families,” she reiterated.

Hee was speaking at a press conference at Tanahmas Hotel here yesterday. Also present were SCCS Events and Marketing assistant manager Genevieve Tan and SCCS Sibu coordinator Pau Kiew Chuang. According to Hee, hair loss following chemotherapy is frightening for children patients undergoing treatment.

“That’s why we all have our heads shaved to show the children that losing hair is okay,” she said.

Meanwhile, she said last year’s project saw over RM1 million raised with over 900 heads shaved. Stating that SCCS requires financial support, Hee said they had spent over RM3 million to build a halfway home in Kuching in 2013 and one other in Miri in 2016.

“The halfway homes provide accommodation to the family members of the children undergoing medical treatment. So far, over 180 families have benefitted from these halfway homes,” she said, adding that SCCS has spent over RM1 million on the children’s medical expenses.

SCCS will continue to expand and upgrade, particularly in giving cancer-stricken children and families the various support.

“We are also planning a more in-depth survivorship programme to increase stem cell donors in Sarawak. We’ll also help to increase hospital facilities,” she added.

‘Go Bald 10’ will commence on May 6 in Kuching at CityONE Megamall, followed by Miri at Permaisuri Imperial City Mall on May 13. The third leg on May 20 at Delta Mall in Sibu while the fourth on May 27 will be at Bintulu Times Square Megamall.

‘Go Bald 10’ pledge cards are available for collection at the reception counter of Tanahmas Hotel here between 10am and 8pm daily. The cards will also be available at the ‘Go Bald’ road show at Delta Mall here over the weekends between March 17 and May 27 from noon to 7pm.
