KUCHING: The Council of Kuching City South (MBKS) is placing several roll-on roll-off (roro) containers within its area of jurisdiction for residents to dispose of large disposable items.

The roro containers can be found at 14 identified locations until Chinese New Year eve (Feb 15).

They are meant for residents to dispose of sizeable waste given the tradition of the Chinese to do spring cleaning before ringing in the lunar New Year.

Six of the 14 locations will have the roro containers between today (Feb 10) and Feb 15.

Three roro containers are placed at Tabuan Jaya Lorong Bayor Bukit 2 (former MBKS market), two each at Tabuan Laru Lrg B4 (next to recycling centre) and Bintawa Fishing Village (behind Bintawa Temple), and one each at MBKS Bintawa Wet Market, Taman Riverview (next to basketball court) and Jalan Berjaya, Kenyalang Park.

One roro container will each be placed at Lorong Foochow 2 and Jalan Penyau from Feb 11 to 13.

Beginning Feb 12, two roro containers are to be placed at Rock Road (behind Twin Towers) and one at Bintawa Fishing Village (Lorong 8).

The council will then place two roro containers at Hui Sing Lorong 5 (next to MBKS Park) from Feb 13 to 15.

Jalan Datuk Sim Kheng Hong 5, Kenyalang Park and Kenyalang Food Centre, Lorong 2, Kenyalang Park will each have one roro container on Feb 14 and 15.

At a news conference yesterday, MBKS councillor Kho Teck Wan said these roro containers are meant for local residents to discard large unwanted items such as old furniture.

She added that the council does not want to see the people simply deposit bulky waste by the roadside.

“This is the first time MBKS is placing so many roro containers in residential areas. We remind people that these roro containers are not for them to dispose of industrial waste.

“We hope the people do not simply dump large garbage by the roadside because this will tarnish the image of Kuching as a neat and clean city,” said Kho, who is Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Women chief.
