KUCHING: Enforcement Officers from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) Kuching Regional Office detained a lorry and 561 mangrove (bakau) poles at Jalan Stephen Yong here yesterday.
According to a statement issued by SFC, the corporation’s enforcement team was patrolling when they detected a suspicious looking lorry.
The team subsequently trailed the lorry to a store located at Jalan Stephen Yong where they found 105 pieces of mangrove poles on the lorry.
“An extended search at the storage revealed another 456 poles, which were believed to be extracted from a forest near Sungai Rayu. Further checks revealed the lack of documents for the poles,” added SFC.
A police report on the case has been made at the Batu Kawa Police Station and the detained lorry and poles will be handed over to the Forest Department for further investigation and disposal.
SFC reminds members of the public, especially contractors, to buy or purchase timber from legal sources.
