KOTA KINABALU: A 44-year-old woman was fined RM10,000, in default, four months in jail by the Sessions Court here yesterday for employing an illegal immigrant.

Judge Azreena Aziz meted out the sentence on Florence Wong Yun Hiong after the latter admitted to committing the offence at Sing Kong Sdn Bhd in Jalan Padas, Beaufort at 3.10pm on November 29, 2017.

Florence employed a Filipina who has no valid document to work in her premises.

The offence is framed under Section 55B of the Immigration Act 1959/63 which carries a jail term of up to a year or a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, for each illegal immigrant, on conviction.

In mitigation, Florence who was not represented prayed for a lenient fine as this was her first offence while prosecuting officer Hamisah Puteh from the Immigration Department urged for a deterrent sentence to serve as a lesson to the accused.
