MIRI: The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) detected five cases of counterfeit goods being sold here so far this year.

Its Miri head Joe Azmi Jamil said the offences, under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, were detected during a raid by KPDNKK personnel last month.

“During the raid, we seized fake goods worth RM1,682 in the form of alcoholic beverages, branded clothes and others,” he said after launching the Chinese New Year Festive Season Price Control Scheme 2018 at Boulevard Hypermarket here yesterday.

He said during the period of the scheme, which ends on Feb 21, KPDNKK enforcement teams will conduct price checks at various markets and supermarkets to ensure compliance.

He added the scheme is part of efforts to protect customers against profiteering due to high demand for several essential goods during the festive season.

“During the implementation of the scheme, traders must display pink coloured labels for price-controlled goods and not sell price-controlled goods above the maximum price,” he said.

Under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, individual traders found selling above the ceiling price will be fined RM100,000 or jailed no more than three years, or both, or compounded up to RM50,000.

Companies found guilty will be fined up to RM500,000 or compounded up to RM250,000.

Traders who do not use a pink sign to mark out controlled items will be fined up to RM10,000 or compounded up to RM5,000 for individuals, or fined up to RM20,000 or compounded up to RM10,000 for companies.
