BINTULU: The state government has allocated RM10.5 million to repair the 173 schools across Sarawak damaged by the recent flood.
A sum of RM250,000 has also been approved to repair two clinics – Nanga Tau Clinic and Nanga Sangan Clinic – in Tatau, Bintulu.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg told a press conference this after visiting and presenting aid to flood victims at an evacuation centre here on Monday.
Since last week, a total of 489 victims from 113 families have sought shelter at the evacuation centre after their houses were affected by floods.
Abang Johari, who described the recent flood situation as the worst in 55 years, congratulated the state disaster management committee chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, as well as other agencies for their efforts.
“I thank the state disaster management committee under Datuk Amar Uggah and other relevant agencies for their hard work and efficiency to help the flood victims,” he said.
During the recent flood, Selangau District in Sibu had the highest number of schools affected (40), followed by Mukah and Limbang (28 each), Miri and Bintulu (22), Serian (9), Sarikei (3), as well as Betong and Kapit (2 each).
Abang Johari said he had also directed the Resident’s Office as well as Land and Survey Department to find higher sites to relocate five schools located in flood-prone areas, adding that the new sites must also be more convenient for parents.
He added that the funds to relocate the five schools was included in the RM10.5 million allocation.
