SIBU: SJK(C) Tung Hua held a pre-Chinese New Year celebration yesterday to promote Chinese culture and foster unity amongst staff and pupils.

School management board chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau said the annual event has been held for many years, describing it as a good way to let children know more about their rich culture.

“It serves as a reminder that the Chinese culture is not to be forgotten. This celebration allows the teachers and students to know more about Chinese culture and promote it,” he said.

He also pointed out that CNY is not just celebrated by the Chinese, but by non-Chinese as well.

“We can see during CNY, people from different races and cultural backgrounds join the Chinese in the celebration.

“I hope that through this function, we can foster unity among students and teachers of different races, cultural  backgrounds and beliefs,” he added.

Lau also said he was happy to note that the school has progressed well in all fields.

“We help our students to excel not only academically, but in co-curricular activities as well.

“We are trying our best to hone our students’ talents,” he said.

The board chairman said the school’s infrastructural development has been impressive and singled out the new school hall for special mention.

“Construction of our new school hall is nearing completion and will be able to accommodate about 900 people at any one time.”

Stressing the importance of good rapport between the school and parents, Lau said parents are always welcomed to communicate with the school to suggest improvements.

Also present at the event were the chairperson of the school’s parent-teacher association Teresa Wong, headmistress Yu Siong Chiew, and vice-headmistress Yung Chung Mee.
