KUCHING: The Employees Provident Fund (EPF), through its official Facebook page, yesterday dismissed a statement circulating over social media which claimed its system would be down for six months as a result of a fire at its Petaling Jaya branch.

The statement from EPF came after netizens who received the false statement via WhatsApp sought clarification on the matter.

The WhatsApp notice stated: “KWSP (EPF) system will be down for 6 months due to restoration works caused by mysterious fire. No withdrawals can be made during this period. Sincere apologies for any inconveniences caused.”

The EPF explained that its systems had not been affected by the Petaling Jaya branch fire, adding that only the said branch would be temporarily closed until further notice.

It further assured members that they could still perform withdrawals at any nearest EPF office, and that it would be ‘business as usual’ for EPF.

The Fire and Rescue Department said initial investigation indicated that the fire was caused by a spark that ignited flammable cladding panel used on the building’s exterior.

Meanwhile EPF chief executive officer Datuk Shahril Ridza Ridzuan, in a separate statement later yesterday, said EPF would conduct a thorough investigation and work with the Fire and Rescue Department to ascertain the cause of the fire.

Those seeking further clarification can call the EPF Contact Management Centre on 03-8922 6000, or forward their enquiries via the ‘myEPF’ website http://enquiry.kwsp.gov.my/.
