DENGKIL: The Road Transport Department (RTD) will conduct a 24-hour enforcement patrol on Feb 18 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration on Friday, its director-general Datuk Seri Shaharuddin Khalid said.

He said from Feb 9 to Feb 23 the teams would patrol for 16 hours, namely from 8am to midnight except on Feb 16 and 17.

“The patrol teams will use enforcement vehicles with logo by switching on the beacon light and travelling at a speed of not more than 70 km on the emergency lane,” he told reporters after opening the RTD Station at Dengkil Rest and Service Area (southbound) on the North-South Expressway here Monday.

During the period, Shaharuddin said RTD would also conduct random bus checks at rest and service areas at highways.

“In addition, RTD officers will also board buses incognito to monitor drivers who smoke or use their mobile phones while driving,” he said.

Shaharuddin added that throughout the period, RTD officers would check tyres, brakes and lights of express buses before they depart from the Southern Integrated Terminal (TBS).

He said 120 RTD teams in vehicles and 40 RTD motorcycle units would be involved in the operation.

“The operation will cover 240,000 km of roads nationwide involving 1,500 to 2,000 RTD officers and personnel,” he said. — Bernama
