KUCHING: The Education Department welcomes long-term solutions for flood-prone schools in the state.
State education director Rakayah Madon said this includes moving affected schools to higher ground.
“The efforts now are to find new sites for schools that frequently end up flooding,” she said yesterday, after officiating at a Petronas Back-to-School programme.
She pointed out that the floods this year were extraordinary’ and had affected schools that never had to deal with it before.
“For us, floods disrupt the process of teaching and learning. Our efforts now are to help schools affected with the allocation for disasters such as this,” she said.
Rakayah added that to date, two schools are still flooded and have not reopened.
The other schools not operating are undergoing cleaning.
The department expects to get an estimate of the overall damages after the Chinese New Year.
“For Tatau alone, there’s RM1.3 million worth of damages. For the rest of the areas, we are still waiting for their feedback,” Rakayah added.
