PEKAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak says the Barisan Nasional (BN) has always been sharing its success and wealth with the people and not poverty or suffering as experienced by people in certain countries.

Najib said the country’s government managed the administration and economy well to enable the distribution of revenue to the people irrespective of race to raise their standard of living.

“This does not mean the nation does not have poor people, so if the country’s income is not expanding, the people will be forced to share poverty … Alhamdulillah our country’s income is growing.

“Malaysia’s economic growth in the fourth quarter last year surpassed 5.9 per cent to make the country’s achievement among the highest in the world, so if some people say Malaysia will go bankrupt, or need to save Malaysia, it is a hoax,” he said.

He was speaking at a ‘Kongsi Kasih Gathering’ held in conjunction with the 2018 Chinese New Year at Sultan Ahmad Shah Convention Hall here yesterday.

Also present at the occasion were the Prime Minister’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and Pekan Umno division deputy chief Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Harun who is also the State Felda Affairs Committee chairman.

At the event, 3,650 recipients from the Malay, Chinese, Indian and Orang Asli communities received contributions in the form of ang paus and daily necessities.

Najib who is also Pekan MP said the rating on the Malaysian economy was given by international organisations such as the World Bank, Bloomberg and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

This he said proved the allegations hurled by the opposition were only meant to run down and topple the government.

According to him, the strong economy has enabled the government to also assist people in other countries such as the Rohingya and from such assistance, the diplomatic relations of Malaysia with these countries have strengthened.

Apart from that, Najib said the value of sharing practised by the government in terms of political or economic power also enabled people from various races in the country to live together in harmony.

“…we do not monopolise power in the name of only one race as we take heed of the fact that for a multi-religious and multiracial country to succeed, we must be willing to foster close relationships to create a united nation,” he said.

Najib also said the diversity of religions and cultures is a unique feature of Malaysia as it enabled the people to share the joys of various festive celebrations which in turn bond ties among individuals.

“It is such a joy over here as we could celebrate Hari Raya and when the Chinese New Year comes around, we could also join in the festival…similarly with Deepavali and Christmas.

“Not only do we get to celebrate these occasions, we could also go on holidays during such festivals,” he said.

In jest, Najib added that he hoped the joyous mood and ties would prevail to another festival which would be held soon, inferring to the coming 14th general election. — Bernama
