KUCHING: The sudden appearence of former Deputy Tourism Minister Dato Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib at his father-in-law Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan’s residence on the first day of Chinese New Year open house yesterday had quashed rumours that he was unwell.

When he was asked for his so-called disappearance from public eyes due to poor health, he answered with a big smile, “I’m okay” and walked off to join his father-in-law and local entrepreneur Datuk Philip Ting for a drink at one of the private rooms in the huge mansion.

However, according to his step mother-in-law Datuk Lorna Enan Muloon, Sulaiman has quite often came for a visit, while plying Kuching and Singapore.

He was later among those who had private talks with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Speculation was rife among media personnel who were present at the open house that Sulaiman might want to make a comeback to politics as what his father’s plan.

That being the case, he may be fielded in Mukah to replace incumbent Tan Sri Muhammad Leo Michael Toyat Abdullah who is not seeking re-election.

Prior to this, Taib’s youngest daughter Dato Hanifah Taib had been rumoured to take over from Leo Michael.

Sulaiman is the third child of Taib.
