MIRI: School-children are encouraged to be active in sports, in line with Ministry of Education (MoE)’s vision of quality education that not only subject to the classroom pedagogy, but also that outside the class.

In stressing this, Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting said co-curriculum activities should serve as a platform to ensure this kind of quality education, going beyond the classroom.

“Should this be planned correctly and thoroughly, the students’ enrichment goal would be achieved and the country’s prosperity would become a reality, in line with the National Transformation 2050 (TN50).

“The understanding from all parties on the importance of active involvement of pupils in sports activities and competitions facilitates the process of achieving the balance in physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual (development) as stipulated under the National Education Philosophy,” he spoke in declaring open the division-level 34th Primary School Sports Council (MSSR) Games at SK Merbau field here yesterday.

Ting also called upon all junior athletes to be committed to and work together in upholding discipline to a maximum level – both on individual and contingent levels, strengthening relationships and giving their best cooperation throughout the tournament.

“What is important is that we are cultivating good sportsmanship in the children and also the principle of sports itself, which is for physical health and well-being.

“I am proud of the previous 2017 MSSR where Miri athletes exhibited their best performances. No doubt, we have potential athletes who can go further and engrave their names in the national arena,” Ting pointed out.

This year’s games gather junior athletes from 45 primary schools across this division. The closing ceremony will take place at Miri City Council (MCC) stadium next Tuesday (Feb 27).

According to organising chairperson Sabtu Matali, the three-day games are not held on consecutive days.

“The sport events will run today (yesterday), on Feb 26 and Feb 27,” he said.

Last year’s MSSR Best Girl Athlete, Elaine Wong Koh Ching of SJK Chung Hua Krokop lit the torch of the tournament at the opening ceremony, while Muhd Azriel Haiqal Chrisman of SK Anchi read the athletes’ pledge.

Miri Education officer Dr Hassan Hasbollah and Miri Division Headmasters Council (MGB) chairperson Choo Chong Lok were also present.
