Duo feared drowned while five others saved in boat mishap

TAWAU: A man and a woman were feared drowned while five were saved when a boat capsized at the Kalabakan River, yesterday.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department, a caller said a boat headed towards Nunukan, Indonesia with seven people on board had capsized. Five people were found safe while two, believed to be a man and a woman were still missing.

The call was made at 12.16pm yesterday and the district Fire and Rescue Department sent a team to the scene, which is about 100 kilometres from Tawau.

The operations chief said the team was aided by a volunteer team and started the search and rescue operation from the Kalabakan River Jetty using a boat which took about one hour to reach the scene where the boat was believed to have capsized.

A surface operation was conducted to find the victims but they were not found. The operation was called off at 7pm  and was postponed until today.
