LIMBANG: A US traveller cheated death on Thursday afternoon, the second time in six months when his makeshift boathouse took in water and almost sank in Limbang river.

This time the modified boathouse-on-raft powered by an outboard engine owned by Jonathan Wayne 72, almost capsized in front of the Customs Jetty at 4.48 pm.

Limbang Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) station chief Tawang Lingem said the victim was safe and the boat had been tied to the jetty.

“Firemen helped to unload and moved the belongings of the victim from the boat which had taken in water,” he said yesterday.

Tawang said the incident was the second time that Jonathan’s boat almost capsized.

The first incident occurred on Sept 12 last year. Jonathan was travelling from Limbang to Brunei when his boat was swept by the swift currents in the river and ended up getting stuck on an iron object for tying barges by the bank of Limbang River near Kampung Limpaong. He was saved by the barge’s crew.
