The entrance to Peking River transformed into a mud bath after the rainy season.

MIRI: More than 800 residents of seven longhouses near Sungai Peking, Tinjar are appealing to the government to improve the condition of the road leading their longhouses as it is getting impassable during rainy season.

Sungai Peking Road which stretches over 18km from Jalan Ladang PJP Ekang-Banyok and 22 km from Long Lama town is now virtually a mud track, leaving inhabitants around almost out of contact with the outside world.

Apart from residents of seven longhouses using the route, the area has a primary school, SK Sungai Peking that depends on the road. The trip to the village and the school takes three hours from Miri city.

According to a villager, the road is becoming dangerous, especially during the monsoon season when it is not only slippery but full of potholes that make it difficult to drive through.

“Vehicles often end up in deep holes and when it rains – the muddy road can only be used by four-wheel drive vehicles,” said the villager.

According to him, the worst sections of the road are described by villagers as looking like pools of mud fit for buffaloes to wallow in.

The road is full of holes and so deep in mud that only four-wheel drive vehicles can get through though they are prone to get stuck in the mud, especially with an inexperienced driver, he said.
