Repair work on the running track of the Miri City Council Field.

MIRI: The poor condition of the running track at Miri City Council (MCC) Field for the just-concluded Miri District MSSM Track and Field Championship has prompted criticism from parents.

In a press statement released on Friday, Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS) chief executive officer Dato Dr Fong Onn Min revealed that parents were worried for their children’s safety during the three-day schools championship from Feb 21-23.

“We noticed that the repair works at the running track only commenced a day before the main event, which leaves everyone of us puzzled how they can complete the work in time for the championship.

“Our athletes as well as those representing their respective schools have been training very hard for this championship. If they are injured or hurt because of the uneven or damaged running track, it is very unfair.

“To be honest, the running track should have been maintained from time to time so that athletes could make good use of the track and field, but I think that the authorities responsible for this has failed them,” Fong said.

It was also noted that the sorry state of the facilities could spark controversy over the relative performance of athletes and results.

“In one running track, one part is uneven whilst the other side is in okay condition. I do not think that the result is fair and just,” said Fong, who also urged the relevant authority to take necessary action.
