KUCHING: Two flood mitigation projects are slated for Sarawak – both awaiting their respective launch dates.
According to Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, the approved ceiling costs are RM150 million for the Kuching project, and RM100 million for the Sibu project.
“We have appointed the contactors for the projects and we are now getting into the finer details on the costs. These (projects) will help mitigate areas affected by flash floods,” he said when met after declaring open Kampung Tabuan Lot multipurpose hall, which was named after him.
“We are currently discussing the launch (dates) with the PM (Prime Minister) and CM (Chief Minister). If PM wants to launch the one in Kuching, then we would get CM to launch the one in Sibu,” said Wan Junaidi, who is Santubong MP.
He added the project in Sibu would be the third phase, focusing on predominantly-Bumiputera areas. The total cost for the project in Sibu is RM890 million, of which the RM300-million section had been implemented.
The federal minister said he would apply for the allocation, meant to implement the fourth phase of the project next year.
For the state capital, the project would be implemented in flash flood-prone areas like Sarawak General Hospital, Kampung Tabuan Melayu, Kampung Sungai Bedil, Kampung Gersik and the federal housing area.
He also assured all that the projects would be carried out by Sarawakian contractors.
Earlier, Wan Junaidi said that his side was all ready to continue serving the people if given the chance to contest in Santubong in the upcoming parliamentary election, adding that he was still able to contribute and focus on duties as a full minister and parliamentarian.
Wan Junaidi, 72, has been Santubong MP for six terms – he was once the parliamentarian for Batang Lupar constituency.
At the event yesterday, he announced an allocation of RM100,000 meant for the maintenance and upgrading of the multi-purpose hall at Kampung Tabuan Lot.
