SRI AMAN: Police have arrested a local businessman after his wife’s severed head was found at the banks of Sungai Batang Lupar, Jalan Skait Lama on Saturday.

State CID chief Datuk Dev Kumar, in a statement issued today, said the 42-year-old suspect was picked up by police on Sunday, after police were able to identify the deceased.

“The deceased, a Chinese national, was identified after her father stepped forward to confirm her identity to us on the same day at 1.45pm. The 31-year-old woman had married a local man in 2011 and settled in Sri Aman with two kids,” he said.

Dev added follow-up investigations by interviewing the husband claimed that his wife had run off several days earlier, but had failed to lodge a police report for certain reasons.

“We found several inconsistencies in his statement regarding his wife’s disappearance, which led to his arrest the same evening for further investigation,” he said.

Dev pointed out that the case, which was previously classified as sudden death, has been reclassified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

“Police have obtained a week-long remand against the suspect starting Sunday to facilitate police investigation.

“The case is being investigated and effort are being made to gather evidence,” he said, adding that a post-mortem was scheduled to be conducted on the victim’s head.

On March 3, a villager chanced upon the head, believed to be that of a woman, at around 4.30pm and promptly alerted the police. CID personnel from Sri Aman police headquarters were dispatched to the scene upon receiving the report and recovered the severed head.

Preliminary examination at the Sri Aman Hospital found that the woman had died within 24 hours, aged between 20 to 30 years old.

Further inspection revealed that there was no report of a missing of a woman received in Sri Aman or the surrounding districts recently.
