GRSS STPM candidates hold up their result slips with their teachers yesterday.

KUCHING: Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) candidates of Green Road Secondary School (GRSS) were easy to spot, especially those visibly trembling in anxiety, as they arrived at the school to collect their results yesterday.

As both hands of the clock ticked into the hour of reckoning, the school’s operations room was filled with Form 6 teachers and former students.

GRSS senior assistant Lau Choon Teng, standing in for principal Abang Othman Abang Masagus, broke the news that one of their own was in Putrajaya that very moment to receive the STPM 2017 Best Student Award in the Urban Category.

The student – Bonnie Chong Kai Hui – was one of three Sarawakians named among the nation’s best.

According to Chong’s form teacher Dr Tan Phoi Tsze, they were very confident she would excel, but were pleasantly surprised that she shot well past the state ranks and into the nationals.

“As a teacher, I’m very happy for her because all her hard work has paid off. Bonnie has been a very good student, not just academically.

“She is a very humble person and active in co-curriculum activities. She can also manage her stress very well and respects all her teachers,” Tan told reporters.

While most people are all about results, Tan stressed that attitude is more important and that Chong is always positive and does her best.

GRSS had 121 STPM students from the Science and Arts streams.

As the sealed slips were handed out, former students detached the perforated edges and scanned their results. One group even met the suspense as a team after a quick countdown before opening their result slips.

Amidst the multitude of reactions, teachers called above the noise to remind them to fill out a form so the school could analyse the results later.

“I’m very excited about my results. Where I hope to go is still a blur. I applied everywhere. Once I get accepted, then I’ll narrow down what I want to do,” he said, adding that he was eyeing something related to biology.

Fellow Science stream candidate Kong Chat Niam said that his 4As were a result of studying hard every day.

“You need to be interested in the subject before you get your results. And I have interest in all my subjects,” said Kong, whose interest is in engineering.

Meanwhile, best friends Angelline Corinthia Edris and Nur Nadia Mohamad Sedau had been working as phone operators while waiting for their results.

Angelline expressed an interest in history and is deciding whether to pursue education or law.

“Friends and teachers helped a lot. Just don’t give up and share what you know,” she said of her 2As and 2Bs.

Nur Nadia said that study groups had helped her a lot.

”After school, we carpool to the library and discuss what we don’t understand, and make sure everyone gets it,” she said, adding she is thankful for her 3As and 1B, and is deciding between a future in linguistics or psychology.
