Riam Road Secondary School to represent Malaysia in TIMSS

MIRI: Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS), a renowned Chinese Independent School has been chosen by the International Association for the Evaluation of Education Achievement (IEA) in Boston, USA to represent Malaysia in the Trends In International Mathematics And Science Study (TIMSS) 2019.

TIMSS in Malaysia will be administered by the Planning and Educational Research Unit of the Ministry of Education, Malaysia.

RRSS’ CEO Dato’ Dr Fong Onn Min said the Ministry congratulated RRSS for being chosen as a worldwide international benchmark for Mathematics and Science education.

The first phase of TIMSS will be conducted from October to November, 2018.

He said RRSS is honoured to be recognised internationally and selected for its high quality Mathematics and Science teaching-learning.

“Our school is always at the forefront of educational reform in this region. The superior standard of Mathematics and Science of RRSS is achieved through its unique curriculum and textbooks as well as the establishment of the external Junior Science, Mathematics and English (JSME) Examination Board of RRSS to ensure our students’ standard in the three subjects is on par, if not better than their counterparts’ in regions like Singapore, Hong Kong and the UK,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The JSME Syndicate is run by renowned professors from the world’s top notch universities such as Oxford University of the UK, Yale University and California Institute of Technology (Caltec) of USA, National University of Singapore (NUS) and Hong Kong universities.

The chief examiner of JSME Mathematics is Professor Dr David Wilton (Oxford) and of JSME Science is Professor Dr Kang Hway Chuan (Yale, Caltec) of National University of Singapore – both authorities in their fields of specialisation and research.

Prof Wilton has set up a Mathematics Prize Foundation for the top Mathematics students of the school with the first winner of the 5-star award in Miri conferred by the Ministry of Education Malaysia 2013.
