SIBU: SMK Sacred Heart has again emerged among the top 10 schools in the nation for excellent results in last year’s Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examination when the results were released yesterday.

According to SMK Sacred Heart senior assistant (for Form 6) Lai May Ging, the school has obtained Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.35 – with 100-per cent passing rate.

She said this was the second time that the school achieved this feat.

“Our principal David Teo has gone to Putrajaya to receive the award,” she told reporters here yesterday.

Lai also pointed out that as far as STPM is concerned, SMK Sacred Heart has been the top school in the state for three years running.

On last year’s STPM, she said the school had 68 candidate with 12 obtaining straights As.

The school’s STPM top-scorers are Wong Fong Fei, Christine Lau Lik Zi, Elaine Sii Liu Wen, Ha How Ung, Christy Law Siew Chin, Carmen Lim Mei Sze, Hwang Mee Ling, Kang Zhen Leong, Venessha John, Bika Nyambik, Lau Siew Chi and Roland Mecal.

Permanent secretary to Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Hii Chang Kee said he was proud of the achievement of SMK Sacred Heart, which is his alma mater.

Hii, who is also SMK Sacred Heart alumni association president, attributed the achievement to the school’s learning environment, which he motivated the students to study hard.

Meanwhile, straight-A student Roland Mecal believed that education can get someone out of poverty. He scored 4As, 3Bs and 1C.

“My mother is not working and my father only earns about RM1,000 every month.

“I have a younger sister currently studying at SMK St Elizabeth.  I need to study hard to help my poverty-stricken family.

“Studying hard is imperative in obtaining good results,” said Roland, who hails from Rumah Nyala in Song.

The youngster plans to take up law either at Universiti  Malaya or Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
