KUCHING: Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan wants a deal with Sukma coaches: Deliver the golds as the State Government promises to give them what they ask for.

Chairing a recent meeting with chief coaches of the various sports, he asked that they write direct to him at his email address or call direct to his handphone if they have problems regarding equipment or other problems in gearing up for the upcoming Sukma in Perak.

“If we give you everything you asked for, can you promise us the gold?” he asked.

The Assistant Minister also wants the chief coaches of all the sports competing in Sukma to  form a special committee.

“We want to make sure  we will become champion and must form a special committee by the coaches to select the best athletes.

“There is also a need to call back athletes who are Sarawakians if they are good  as we want all our own athletes to represent the State. There are a few of our athletes studying in the Sabah Sports School who are good enough while in squash there are players now studying in other countries and we may recall them back.

“I also want all the equipment to be tip top and make sure you do not do things in the last minute,” said Snowdan.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Sports Corporation CEO Dr. Ong Kong Swee, who also spoke at the meeting, issued a strong statement to the coaches to achieve their KPI based on their contracts.

The coaches were also advised to direct their concerns to the sports co-ordinators in charge of the respective sports who will bring up such matters straight to him.

Ong also brought up the importance of anti-doping and instructed the coaches to take special care to prevent any problems arising out of athletes consuming the wrong food or supplements.

More than 30 chief and assistant coaches from muaythai, judo, cycling, wushu, karate, sepak takraw, rugby, hockey, lawnbowl, silat, football, taekwondo, tenpin bowling, futsal, handball, swimming, gymnastics, boxing, badminton and other sports attended the meeting held at the State Stadium on Monday.
