Jail for woman who overstayed, 23 illegals

KOTA KINABALU: A woman was jailed for six months by the Sessions Court here yesterday for overstaying in Sabah.

Judge Azreena Aziz imposed the sentence on Lia Baila, 47, who pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 15 (1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

The indictment provides for a maximum fine of RM10,000 or a jail term of up to five years, or to both, upon conviction.

Lia had overstayed in the State after her passport expired  since April 7, 2014.

The judge ordered Lia to serve the sentence starting from the day of her arrest.

Meanwhile, another eight women and 15 men were jailed between four and five months by the same court for entering the state illegally.

All of the accused, between 19 and 55 years old, admitted before the judge to separate charges under Section 6 (1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

The indictment carries a maximum fine of RM10,000 or a jail term of up to five years and also liable to whipping of not more than six strokes, upon conviction.

Twelve of the men were also ordered to be whipped once while others were spared due to their age and gender.

All of the accused, including Lia, were also ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving their sentences for their bio metrics data to be recorded before being deported back to their respective countries.
