KUCHING: Retired British Royal Air Force (RAF) master engineer Andy Muniandy recently made a nostalgic down memory lane visit here where he was deployed during the confrontation period in Malaysia.

His visit was in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the commemoration of the peace accord on the ending of confrontation in Malaysia in 1966.

During the visit, Andy gave a commemorative lecture at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus here, after which he visited the Heroes Graves Memorial Park at Jalan Taman Budaya. He was welcomed at the park by Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF) Heritage Development Committee chairman Dato Lim Kian Hock and Royal Malaysia Police Veterans Association Kuching Branch exco members.

Andy was briefed by Lim on the development of Heroes Graves Memorial Park, the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the confrontation and the historic installation of the commemorative plaques by the Special Air Services Australian (SAS) in 2015, Malaya-Borneo Veterans Association (MBVA) and 4 Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR) in 2016 and the New Zealand-Malaya Veterans Association (NZMVA) in 2017.

Apart from the memorial park, he also visited the Batu Lintang WWII POW Memorial Square.

On his visit, Andy said he was impressed with Kuching’s development and its warm hospitality.

He looks forward to another visit here next year to coincide with the centenary of the Royal Air Force (RAF) Benevolent Fund founded by Lord Trenchard in 1919 of which he is proud to be an active member in addition to his involvement with the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Andy presented Lim with a copy of his book ‘Hercules’ titled after the British well-known RAF Military Aircraft where he was a team member.
