Meanwhile, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Baru Miri showed improvement after being ranked bottom in the SPM results.

“Though not ranked among the top secondary schools in Miri, I am still grateful for the hard work of the teachers and students of the school.

“SMK Baru was at the bottom among 16 secondary schools in Miri in the 2016 SPM results and for 2017, we defied the odds and the results are better than what we expected and I am just so grateful,” SMK Baru principal Jerrah Pandin told reporters at the school yesterday.

Jerrah praised the teachers for their cooperation and determination to make the 2017 SPM result better than the previous year with a GPS of 5.38 from 5.81 in 2016 and he thanked the teachers for the additional classes held.

“When I took over this school in January last year and after seeing the SPM 2016 results, I took the challenge and asked each subject teacher to prepare their respective strategic plans, and from there we tried to implement the best ways to help students learn and get better results.

“The most effective formula is the extra classes and I applaud the teachers for their efforts and sacrificing their time to hold free additional classes for students including during weekends and holidays. Obviously, the sacrifices of these teachers have been proven worthwhile looking at today’s SPM results,” she said, adding examination analysis was also regularly conducted to identify weaknesses that needed to be improved.

For 9A scorer Nur Farazila Jurimiee, continuous effort and the ‘never give up’ attitude is the secret of her excellent achievement.

The eldest of four siblings thanked her mother Zafirah Abdullah and Jerrah for helping in her studies.

“The important thing is do not despair, attend the extra classes and I would usually ask my teachers, friends or my class WhatsApp group if I needed clarification with my studies while my mother who is a nurse helped me with Biology at home,” said Nur Farazila, who aspires to become a doctor in psychology or pharmacy.

Pius Bilong, the father of another top scorer Keverne Aren, meanwhile is thankful and proud with his daughter’s result.

“I did not expect Keverne to get such good results but nonetheless I am so proud of her though I see her way of studying with all the technology nowadays is so much different from my time and I am thankful for the extra classes conducted by the school,” said the process engineer based in Qatar.

Keverne, the third of four siblings, obtained 8As in her SPM. She is planning to take up accountancy and according to her, writing her daily activities in her journal helps her plan her study time.
