Men jailed a total of 15 years for gang robbery, causing hurt

SIBU: The Sessions Court here yesterday sentenced two men to a total of 15 years in jail after they pleaded guilty to two charges.

On the first charge, Mohd Safarnizam Abdul Manan, 23, and Mohd Shaffrin Shah Saffiee, 25, received seven years in jail for voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery.

The charge was framed under Section 394 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 20 years in jail and caning.

Mohd Safarnizam and Mohd Shaffrin were also sentenced to eight years’ jail and two strokes of the rotan for gang robbery under Section 395 of the Penal Code.

The Section provides for up to 20 years in prison and caning.

The court ordered the sentences to run concurrently from the date of their arrest on March 7.

Mohd Shaffrin was also produced in the Magistrates’ Court for a charge under Section 354 of the Penal Code for using criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty.

The Section provides for 10 years’ jail, or a fine, or caning, or any two such punishments.

He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to three years’ jail and one stroke of the rotan.

The sentence took effect from yesterday. According to the facts of the case, Mohd Safarnizam and Mohd Shaffrin robbed a 19-year-old woman of her purse between 3.30pm and 4pm on March 3 near a flat in Sibu Jaya. The victim was on her way back to her rented house in Sibu Jaya after work when the duo brought her somewhere in Sibu Jaya to beat her up. They relieved her of her purse, which contained a handphone, cash and MyKad. Mohd Saffrin also touched her breasts and private part.

The victim suffered injuries to her head and abdomen. She later lodged a police report and the two men were arrested on March 7.
