SIBU: It is still early in the track & field season but Bintangor’s schoolboy thrower Wong Yu Kiong already has a successful outing in Australia.

The 14-year-old student of SMK Tong Hua threw a personal best of 15.91m to win the Under-14 shot put at the Little Athletics International Championships held in Perth recently.

Malaysia sent 10 school athletes for the annual meet hosted in rotation by Malaysia, Singapore and Western Australia.

In the discus, however, he only managed a distance of 46.19m which was way below his personal best of 53.51m.

His coach Leong Shuen Keong said Yu Kiong was hit with a bout of sickness before the start of the event which was adversely affected by strong wind conditions. The young thrower is also looking forward to represent Sarawak in the MSSM Inter-State Championships to be held in Selangor in April.

“Hopefully, he will one day take over the baton from the current state shot putt champion Kong Chin Poh when the latter retires,” Leong added.
