Amirul, Derrick join favourites in chase for SJAO titles

KUCHING: Mohd Amirul Fadhlan took over from Steven Hii Tai Leong as the new leader of the Boys Special category after the second day of competition in the 1st Sarawak Junior Amateur Open at the Damai Golf and Country Club (DGCC) at Damai, Santubong yesterday.

Amirul, who was third on 77 strokes after the opening day, shot a 76 yesterday for a two-day total of 153 to lead Aziel Teo Ken Yi (74, 79) and Steven who dropped to third with 155 strokes.

Macolm Ting Siong Hung is still leading the Boys A contest with 149 strokes, leading Ahmad Adib Ridhwan by 15 strokes while five strokes further adrift in third place was Gianino Foo Chee Ming.

The Boys B saw new leader Kong Disheng Derrick who shot a good 79 yesterday for a two-day total of 169, three strokes ahead of Wesley Chai Wui Chern and five strokes ahead of first day leader Elden Sim Zhen.

In Boys C, Saxen Hii Shang Yao looked set to win this category as he carded a 75 yesterday to take a massive 63-stroke lead over Abang Al Qayyoom and Andy Chew Kok Siew.

Meanwhile, tournament favourite in the Girls Special Zulaikah Nasser is also enjoying a big lead with a 73 on Day 1 and another 73 on Day 2 for a total of 146 strokes, leaving Noor Arfrina A’in Ibrahim trailing by 32 strokes and Nicole Wong Yen Ping was third on 180 strokes.

Angel Hii also maintained her lead in Girls B with 161 strokes, finishing 21 strokes ahead of Angelie Jirembai Ong and 41 strokes ahead of Amber Tho Eu Mei while Girls C leader Mirabel Ting Ern Hui posted a similar 74 on the second day for a two-day total of 148, pulling farther ahead of Rania Rafify (181) and Ho Yunxi (225).

This inaugural championship which attracted 32 participants will end today.
