Sibu Swans, Mukah Polytechnic share Mukah 10s glory

KUCHING: Sibu Swans beat Piranhas Rugby Club of Miri 17-12 in the Cup final to emerge champions of the Mukah 10s Rugby Championship at Politeknik Mukah rugby field last Sunday.

Kuching Rugby Football Club lifted the Plate title when they beat Sibu Saints 31-5 while Mukah B won the Bowl category after blanking KWRC 21-0 and

Bintulu won the Shield category beating Mukah A 19-0.

In the women’s category, home team Politeknik Mukah B emerged as the champion with UiTM Kuching finishing second and Politeknik Mukah A third in their round-robin league competition.

Sarawak Rugby Union (SRU), happy with the number of teams involved in the two-day competition, are hoping that other affiliates will actively organise events to promote rugby.

SRU president Richard Song Swee Jin, who was represented by secretary Abdul Ghafar Arshad, congratulated Setiaraja Swiftlets, Mukah for organising the competition and hoped that the Mukah Division Rugby Association would be established soon to further promote the game especially for the junior development programmes in the division.

Politeknik Mukah was commended for their support and assistance.

Sixteen teams comprising 12 men’s and four women’s teams participated in the competition.

The men’s teams were Sibu Swans, Sibu Saints, Kuching Rugby Football Club, Piranhas Rugby Club (Miri), Mukah A & B, GB13 Skulls, Politeknik Mukah, Bintulu, WORC, UiTM Kuching and KWRC (men’s) while Politeknik Mukah A & B, UiTM Kuching and GB13 Roses made up the women’s teams.

Also present at the closing ceremony were Politeknik Mukah Academic Support deputy director Iskandar Ridwan, head of sports unit Soffian Sout and Setiaraja Swiftlets Rugby Club vice president Karim Kaderi.
