MIRI: Bintulu Port Holding Berhad (BPHB) handled a throughput of 50.28 million tonnes of cargo last year compared to 46.45 million tonnes in 2016, an increase of 8.2 per cent.

Its chief executive officer Dato Mohammad Medan Abdullah said it’s their best performance since the commencement of operations.

“This is the third largest throughput and the highest growth rate by comparison with other Malaysian ports.

“Among our key achievements for 2017 are the safe handling of 10,000 liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment since 1983, highest container throughput in East Malaysia with 309,000 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs),” he said at their customer appreciation night here on Tuesday.

He added that BPHB managed to handle 4.22 million tonnes of palm oil, which makes them the largest palm oil-based products exporting terminal in Malaysia – handling 25.5 per cent of
Malaysian palm oil export, the first gassing up and cooling down (GUCD) service provider in Malaysia, and third in Asia Pacific region.

“This success is the result of cooperation among all parties including industry players, customers, business partners, and service providers.”

Medan said they would also focus on other major growth sectors, and to improve efficiency in cargo handling.

Before the customer appreciation dinner on Tuesday, it was last held in Bintulu in 2015 when 18 awards, including special accreditation, were given to industry players, contractors and their strategic partners who have helped BPHB achieve success in the past two years.

The dinner carrying the theme ‘Western Country and Rainforest’ was attended by more than 200 guests dressed in ‘cowboy’ attire, where lucky draws, games and dance performances were held.
