KUCHING: The federal government has declared May 9, 2018 as an additional public holiday throughout the country to enable Malaysians to fulfill their responsibility as voters.

The announcement was made through a statement by the Prime Minister’s Office today, following the Election Commission’s announcement that the polling day for the 14th General Election is on May 9, 2018.

“This public holiday declaration is made based on section 8 of the Holidays Act 1951 for Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan.”

For Sabah and Sarawak, the Prime Minister’s Office stated that the state governments would have to declare the additional public holiday based on their Holidays Ordinance (Sabah) and Public Holidays Ordinance (Sarawak).
